The Accuplacer

The Accuplacer is an untimed standardized test administered via computer.  The Accuplacer tests sentence skills, reading comprehension, arithmetic, elementary algebra, and writing.  The test is adaptive, which means that the difficulty of the questions adjusts based on how well you are performing on the test (the better you do, the more difficult the questions get; the worse you do, the easier the questions get).  This test is used primarily for course placement, most commonly at community colleges and technical programs.  Depending on your SAT scores, taking an Accuplacer may not be required.  Talk to the Guidance Office about registering to take the Accuplacer.

It is important to study and do your best on the Accuplacer, because most colleges require a certain score to enroll in college-level coursework. This means that a low score could place you into remedial level coursework, which you need to pay for but for which you do not receive college credit. The below sites are good resources to help bring up your scores:

Update: There will be a short prep course in the Aspirations Lab in January 2012 for the Accuplacer:

Mon 1/02 – Sentence Skills: sentence structure, gerunds, prepositions, direct and indirect objects
Mon 1/09 – Reading Comprehension Identifying main ideas and secondary ideas, vocabulary, inference
Mon 1/23 - Arithmetic: Fractions, decimals, percents, and simple geometry. Using these to solve for
rate, percent, measurement, and probability
Mon 1/30 – Elementary Algebra: Integers, absolute value, ordering, simple algebraic expressions:
adding and subtracting monomials and polynomials, linear equations, inequalities, quadratic equations,
graphing, word problems

The Accuplacer is a College Board-created test. Their site gives details about how the test is structured and the types of questions it contains.

Has a complete online practice test, broken up into each of the sections.

University of Texas Tutoring and Learning Center site - Math only. Has great practice questions for basic, intermediate, and college-level math, in the form of an online test, with the option of checking your answers as you go.

Like above, this site has a bunch of good math practice tests and gives question by question scoring.

A good site with arithmetic, elementary algebra, sentence skills, and reading comprehension

Has practice questions for a variety of standardized tests: can click on Accuplacer Test Practice  on left menu; offers questions broken down by topic (algebra, geometry, fractions, basic grammar, writing, etc.)

This gives you sample Accuplacer tests on arithmetic and basic algebra. It also is nice because it has solutions to the questions to help you understand how to get the right answer.

Has some good lessons on fractions and percents. This site gives information on how to solve questions. Not specifically Accuplacer.
