Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School and Technical School students are eligible to take advantage of some great opportunities to receive credit while still here at the high school through "On Course for College" and "Academ-e".
First, Michelle Hawley from Western Maine Community College will be meeting with juniors and seniors interested in attending a college course this spring through On Course for College. She will be presenting information in the forum during CBA this Wednesday, November 16th at 8:50 a. m. Interested students should check in with their Common Block advisor, then go directly to the forum.
This is a great way for students to earn college credits and there are scholarships available to cover tuition through the Aspirations Program.
Courses available:
Word Processing
Leadership & Interpersonal Relationships
Public Speaking
College Writing
Intro to Literature
Statistics
Medical Specialties & Pathophysiology
Critical Thinking
Intro to International Relations
Child Development
Next, The University of Maine Academ-e offers courses for university credit to Maine high school seniors through internet-based "online" technologies.
Academ-e consists of courses representing five broad areas: mathematics, sciences, arts, humanities and social sciences. Through nominations by high school principals, guidance counselors and teachers, all Maine high schools are eligible to have students enroll in the Academ-e on a first-come, first-served basis.
Spring course offerings:
Astronomy and Astronomy Lab
Principals of Microeconomics
Mystery Murder and Detectives in Literature
Pre-Calculus
Calculus II
Principles of Statistical Inference
The Maine Coast
Multiculturalism in America
Fundamentals of Music
Intro to World Politics
There will be no tuition charge for a single, three-credit course. However, students are required to cover the cost of one-half credit on a four credit course. The University of Maine will waive all student fees. Academ-e students are responsible for purchasing textbooks in order to participate in their online course.
The deadline for spring enrollment is December 15, 2011. Interested students should see their guidance counselor as soon as possible to learn more about the program. Please visit the Academ-e website at http://www.umaine.edu/academ-e/index.html for further information.
A mandatory orientation at UMaine will be held for all enrolled students on January 4th at 8:00 a.m.
